Divertimento – An Orchestra for Everyone

Description

Music is her life and her greatest passion; a love she shares with her entire family. Her parents support her with all their might in her dream of a professional music career. But at the stuffy, elitist Paris Conservatory, there is intense competition. Unthinkable that a young woman with Algerian roots should conduct a symphony orchestra! When star conductor Sergiu Celibidache admits her to his master class because of her enormous natural talent, she finally finds in him an inspiring, if not exactly gentle, mentor. To overcome prevailing barriers within the world of classical music, she founds her own orchestra together with her sister. Her vision: to build a bridge over the gap of all prejudices and to attract young talents from all areas, whether from Paris's poshest district or the notorious banlieue. Inspired by a true story, the career of the musicians Zahia and Fettouma Ziouani, born in 1978, with whom the director was also in contact for the film.
