Dirk Michaelis is a grateful person.
When he accepts the offer to become the singer of a legendary band with former Renft musicians, he and they score the biggest hit. "Als ich fortging" is the timeless work that has long secured its place in the annals of demanding German pop.
Like hardly any other, the ballad has been and is being covered. There are punk, jazz, a cappella, techno, harmonica, and trumpet versions; the song has been translated into Portuguese, Spanish, and Greek; Clueso, Rosenstolz, and Tokio Hotel have also sung it. They are always songs of a very approachable singer. Songs that are highly emotional and far from the sluggish mainstream of the New German Feeling. Songs that often come gently but never powerless. Songs that you have to listen to, that challenge the audience and are nevertheless permeated by this simple pop appeal that reaches the majority. "Stilles Dorf," "Seelenverwandt," "Wo willst du hin," "Ich möchte mir gehörn," "Feld aus Gold," or more recent songs like "Heimat" and "Alles wird gut" (a duet with his daughter Anouk) represent a versatile oeuvre with atmospheric density and profound poetry. Already on his solo debut "Rockchansons" from 1992, which was followed by ten more albums to this day, the charismatic musician made it clear with his heartfelt compositions that he should not be reduced to just the big hit. Meanwhile, Dirk Michaelis has looked back on four decades of an artistic career. It includes joint tours with Dirk Zöllner (Die Zöllner) and André Herzberg (Pankow) as "Die 3HIGHligen"; the program "Seelenverwandt" together with poet Gisela Steineckert, who wrote many texts for him besides "Heimat" and "Als ich fortging"; two albums on which he translates pieces by Sting, Norah Jones, and Paul McCartney into German; duets with Sarah Connor, Matthias Reim, or José Carreras; participation in the children's album project "Hier lebst du"; or in 2022, his involvement with the "Rocklegenden" alongside Maschine, Silly, and City. Although individual stages are very different, they have one thing in common: Dirk Michaelis reaches heart and mind equally with everything he does. A foundation for where Dirk Michaelis and his songs belong – on stage! Whether in a trio, with a big band, or solo. Artfully and yet lightly, he proves to be a genuine entertainer, his performances benefiting from the fascinating mix of apparent understatement, sensitive sense for nuances, and exuberant musicality.
