"If you are bipolar, your life no longer has continuity. The illness has shattered your past, and to an even greater extent, it threatens your future. With every manic episode, your life as you knew it becomes increasingly impossible. The person you believed yourself to be and knew no longer has a solid foundation. You can no longer be sure of yourself." The German writer Thomas Melle has suffered from bipolar disorder for many years. He is not alone among the creatives of this world. Vincent van Gogh and Ernest Hemingway are also considered bipolar, even though this diagnosis did not exist during their lifetimes. Melle tells, with brutal honesty and linguistic brilliance, about his coping with the illness, personal dramas, and slow improvement – giving an extraordinary insight into what goes on inside a patient.
The gripping and sometimes very comically absurd chronicle of a torn life is an autobiographically radical work of the highest literary power. For this Kurtheater in-house production, director Johanna Böckli (KURGAST) ventured with actor Johann Jürgens into Melle's radical text. Due to the great success, the play will be included again in the program after its Swiss premiere last year.
