In this course, you will dive into the fascinating world of Surrealism – an art movement that deliberately plays with the "crazy," the dreamlike, and the illogical. Together, we will look at how Surrealism emerged and why it became so powerful right after the First World War. You will learn about the ideas, social upheavals, and intellectual currents that shaped this movement – from the Dada movement through psychoanalysis and philosophy to the political tensions of the interwar period. Using selected images, texts, and examples, you will get to know well-known and lesser-known artists – deliberately beyond famous names like Dalí. We clarify key terms such as dream logic, automatism, and chance and ask what these have to do with our perception of art today. The course is aimed at anyone curious about unusual visual worlds and eager to view art differently – understandable, vivid, and without prior knowledge.
