The production of "Die Dreigroschenoper" by the Theater in Kempten brings Bertolt Brecht's famous work to the stage as an entertaining yet sharp social critique. The focus is on the charmingly unscrupulous criminal Macheath, who appears as a businessman of crime. His opponents are the "Beggar King" Peachum, who systematically markets the misery of the poor, and the corrupt police chief Tiger Brown, who wavers between loyalty and self-interest. When Macheath secretly marries Peachum's daughter Polly, a chain of intrigues, betrayal, and power plays begins, in which love is always subordinate to calculation. Even in the face of the gallows, it becomes clear: in this world, justice does not decide, but money determines fate.
Armbruster's production emphasizes the timeless relevance of the material. With minimalist stage design characterized by sparse chain curtains and the targeted use of microphones in the spirit of epic theater, distance and reflection are created. The music – from catchy ballads to jazzy and choral elements – deliberately contrasts with the bitter texts and thus amplifies Brecht's critique of societal issues.
