After his debut as a substitute at the Musikkollegium Winterthur last season, baritone Mikhail Timoshenko now returns to Winterthur. This time, his long-time duo partner Elitsa Desseva is at the piano. As outstanding song interpreters, the two have made a name for themselves internationally; their carefully conceived song programs have been awarded numerous prizes. One can look forward to their interpretation of Schumann's famous «Dichterliebe»: the vocal and piano parts are equal in this song cycle and permeate each other. Despite all the melancholy and pain that the texts and music convey, a restrained optimism often reveals itself in the extended piano postludes.

The songs of the «Elegie», a large song cycle for baritone and chamber orchestra by the Swiss composer Othmar Schoeck, are also marked by feelings of pain and loneliness. The music is dark and introspective over long stretches: possibly a confrontation of the composer with his unhappy relationship with the pianist Mary de Senger – or rather a composed farewell to Romanticism, as the musical avant-garde moved to a place Schoeck no longer understood? The music indeed responds to contemporary trends, as known from Schönberg's «Pierrot Lunaire»; all the more impressive is the last song «Komm, Trost der Welt, du stille Nacht», when it leaves behind the harmonic complexity of the previous songs to find comfort in a simple lullaby melody.
