What Sete Lágrimas unfolds with «Diaspora» is more than a concert: a sensual sound panorama of voices, memories, and cultures spanning six centuries. Between written and orally transmitted music, art songs, folk tunes, and improvised traditions merge into a fascinating whole – simultaneously familiar and surprisingly new. At the center is a world first globally connected through Portuguese seafaring, characterized by contrasts such as light and shadow, pain and joy, violence and passion – made audible in the resonance space of music. Far from romanticized seafaring myths, «Diaspora» tells of transformation. The expansion of the 15th century initiated an intense cultural exchange that still resonates today. In the three program parts Diaspora.pt, Terra, and Península, sound worlds from all continents meet: Villancicos encounter Fado, Afro-Iberian rhythms meet Brazilian Choro, Mornas from Africa with songs from Timor, Macao, India, and Japan. Old perspectives merge with new ones – a moving expedition through identity, memory, and longing. Founded in Lisbon in 1999, Sete Lágrimas combines historical performance practice with artistic curiosity. The ensemble confidently crosses stylistic boundaries and creates dense, touching sound spaces – powerful, multifaceted, and of extraordinary intensity.
