AFTER THE NOVEL BY SIEGFRIED LENZ, ADAPTED FOR THE STAGE BY LUKAS ROSENHAGEN, DIRECTED BY CHRISTIAN TENBROCK Siggi Jepsen, an inmate of a juvenile detention center for difficult adolescents, is supposed to write an essay about the joys of duty. But where to start? He has so much to tell, from his childhood, about his family and his father Jens Ole Jepsen, who was a village policeman in northern Germany during the war. Jepsen pedantically controlled the ban on painting, which the Nazis had imposed on painter Max Ludwig Nansen. Siggi was also supposed to spy on Nansen; he was to do his duty, just like his father. He was to be obedient, regardless of what his conscience says. Was he? The novel "Deutschstunde," whose core theme is the question of guilt and duty in the context of National Socialism, is considered a milestone of German post-war literature and became Siegfried Lenz's most famous work. Only a few German stages have so far staged the novel. The VB Thalia thanks Lukas Rosenhagen, dramaturg at the Schleswig-Holstein State Theater, for allowing us to use his adaptation, making us the first amateur theater in Germany to perform "Deutschstunde."
