Description

A tornado sweeps through Kansas and lifts the young Dorothy's house, with her inside, out of a dusty reality into the dazzling land of Oz. As glittering and colorful as it is there, Dorothy now searches for the way back home. A place that seems to have become unreachable. What exactly is this home that not only Dorothy but perhaps all of us are looking for? Caught between dream and reality is also the spirit of Judy Garland, who became an icon through the Hollywood musical "The Wizard of Oz" at the end of the 1930s. In the fate of the famous actress, the brightest but also the darkest sides of the dream factory are reflected: talent and trauma, Technicolor and pill addiction. In Bastian Kraft's production, Judy appears as Dorothy in front of the camera and sings with restrained tears about a longing we all know – the longing to be at home within ourselves. Because just as the Scarecrow wishes for brains, the Tin Man for a heart, and the Cowardly Lion for courage, we all wish to be enough for ourselves. And while Dorothy follows the winding yellow brick road through forests made of papier-mâché, we follow her – in the hope that the wizard can also give us what we lack. No wonder that the land of Oz is populated by outsiders, queer witches, ambitious mothers, wizards, and melancholic showgirls. It is a world where suddenly everyone begins to dance choreographically, like in a musical. And in the next moment, hold your breath because, through all the kitsch, the cinematic dream is still permeated with pain.
