THE GAMBLER tells the story of an unhappily in love young Russian tutor who escapes into gambling at the casino of the imaginary German spa town "Roulettenburg." He serves a Russian family whose head is anxiously awaiting the death of the ailing aunt. But the aunt is very much alive – and unexpectedly appears at the casino and starts playing. And always bets on zero. And wins. Wins at first – and then she loses. She loses everything in three days: her fortune, the inheritance, her jewelry, the entire property.
Where does the game end, where does seriousness begin? Why does gambling have such an incredibly high status in our society, from scratch cards to the roulette table to football betting? Where does the desire for self-destruction come from, where does the incredible longing to ignore "reason" come from? Dostoevsky dealt with these questions in a brilliant way in his novel. This theme fits perfectly with Baden, which has a great casino tradition.
