The Berlin circus director Paula Busch (*1886, †1973) was one of the great artists of the 20th century, comparable in her field to Marlene Dietrich or Maria Callas. Her parents founded Circus Busch, which was on the brink of bankruptcy in 1917. Paula, who initially chose a bourgeois life, took over the management of the family-owned circus as a divorced woman and single mother, guiding it through the challenges of war and revolutionizing the genre: she reinvented the circus as an art form by incorporating language into the previously silent circus acts. Following this idea, the artist Ida Cramer and actress Sara Spennemann create an entire circus world on stage with minimal set and maximum imagination. They bring a variety of characters to life and immerse themselves in a lost world between poetry and aerial artistry, literature and humor, biopic and documentary.
