«Der Nussknacker» is the last and most successful work of composer Peter I. Tchaikovsky. The plot of the ballet is based on the fantastic story «Nussknacker und Mäusekönig» by the German Romantic E. T. A. Hoffmann. Tchaikovsky knew the fairy tale in the version very popular in Russia by Alexandre Dumas and decided to turn it into a ballet. Now, the ballet «Der Nussknacker» is considered the Christmas classic par excellence.
The story of a young girl who receives a nutcracker as a gift and dreams that it transforms into a fairy-tale prince fascinates young and old around the globe. For a few hours, one is transported from everyday life into the romantic and imaginative world of dreams and desires.
The premiere of the ballet «Der Nussknacker» took place at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg in December 1892. The scenario was created by a then very influential ballet guru Marius Petipa. His deputy, Lev Ivanov, was responsible for the implementation, who had to deal not only with Petipa but also with the composer Tchaikovsky over various interpretational differences. But the effort was worth it. A few years later, the snowflake dance staged by Ivanov was considered the masterpiece of ballet dance, and the best ballerinas wanted to dance the fairy.
