The Flying Carpet: The Ufenau

With the poetry cycle „Huttens letzte Tage“ (published at the end of September 1871), Conrad Ferdinand Meyer achieved his major literary breakthrough late in his career. The mysterious Zurich poet (1825 - 1898) is one of the outstanding figures of Swiss literature. The cycle consists of eight chapters with 71 poems. It tells of the dying knight and humanist Ulrich von Hutten, who settles on the island of Ufenau in Lake Zurich to spend his last days there. Unbowed, he justifies his fight for the Reformation and against the papacy. Huldrych Zwingli had offered asylum to the banished and excommunicated Hutten on Ufenau in August 1523. Nurtured by Pastor Johannes Klarer, he dies there on 29.08. of syphilis. The work was created under Meyer’s impression of his own melancholic mood, the “homeland, my soul’s kindred landscape,” which he experienced as a wanderer, rower, and swimmer, and the great historical events, notably the founding of the German Empire. Actress Mona Petri, recently admired as “Maria” at the Rigiblick Theater, will bring this “love declaration to Ufenau” to life, accompanied by a small ensemble from the circle of the well-known “Swiss Vocal Consort”. A soprano and a tenor, accompanied by a theorbo player, will sensually experience the world of the Renaissance and Reformation period with songs of farewell, pain, and letting go.
