At the center of this brilliant comedy is the hypochondriac Argan, whose thoughts revolve only around himself and his physical well-being. He is constantly preoccupied with imaginary illnesses and ailments, terrorizing his environment in the process. Only his maid Toinette bluntly asks him again and again: "What exactly is wrong with you?" She points out to him that doctors and pharmacists make a fortune off him. But the wealthy Argan is not bothered by this. Being ill is his life's content. Since he always wants to have a doctor around, his daughter Angélique is to marry a doctor. However, she is not at all happy about this, secretly loving the much less wealthy Cléante. The situation escalates when Argan's second wife Béline, who married him only for his money, comes into play, and Argan wants her to sign a will in her favor, secretly plotting intrigues. After numerous complications, it finally comes to a happy ending. Béline's deception is uncovered, and Angélique can finally marry her Cléante. The tragedy of the story is that Molière, who himself played Argan in the world premiere of "Der eingebildete Kranke," was seriously ill. During the fourth performance on February 17, 1673, he suffered a hemorrhage at the end of the performance and died shortly afterward in costume. Thus, this comedy was his last play, and it became one of his most successful. To this day, the wonderfully crazy characters are an integral part of theater stages around the world.
