Description

Güllen, an impoverished "small town in the present" on the edge of the globalized world, is haunted by the past: Claire Zachanassian, once raised in Güllen and unjustly expelled as a prostitute in her youth, has become immensely wealthy through a clever marriage to an oil magnate. In recent years, she has gradually bought up the assets of her little town, driving the people of Güllen into financial ruin. Now the respected lady returns to make an offer: one billion for the death of the shopkeeper Alfred Ill. She demands revenge because her youthful love abandoned her when she was pregnant. The people of Güllen are initially outraged by this incredibly immoral offer, but the prospect of prosperity and the greed for the urgently needed financial boost make them waver.
