THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK is the most famous diary in the world. Anne received it in 1942 for her 13th birthday from her father; just a few days later, she had to flee with her family from the Gestapo. For two years, the Jewish family Frank hid in an attic in Amsterdam – in a cramped space and in constant fear of being discovered. She confides her feelings and thoughts to her diary, which she calls Kitty: about life in hiding, everyday hardships, existential fears, and longing for a life of freedom. But despite all worries, Anne is also a very normal teenager. She has conflicts with her mother, is annoyed by her sister Margot, and falls in love with 15-year-old Peter van Pels, who also lives in the hiding place with his family. The diary entries end two years later – three days before Anne's arrest and deportation to the concentration camps Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen, where she died of typhus shortly before the end of the war. On June 12, 2024, Anne Frank would have turned 95 years old. Director Diana Zöller and the ensemble around Sarah Herrmann in the role of Anne Frank bring the fate of the young Jewish girl sensitively to the stage, accompanied by Yiddish live music. A piece of remembrance, a highly topical subject that shocks, aims to awaken awareness against anti-Semitism and racism, and addresses both young people and adults.
