With Othmar Schoeck's "Summer Night" and Franz Schreker's Intermezzo, the Winterthur Music Society performs works by two composers who both fell into obscurity after World War II and have only been increasingly performed again in recent decades. Composed in 1945, "Summer Night" is a pastoral intermezzo whose warm string sound, atmospheric arcs, and balanced melancholy far surpass the innovative lament contrasts of Schoeck's early work. In this impressionistic program music, listeners can eagerly hear the chirping crickets and singing birds of a warm summer night — no wonder it is one of his most performed works. Franz Schreker wrote the Intermezzo for String Orchestra around 1901 for a composition competition, where he promptly won first prize. The jury, which included Schreker's composition teacher Robert Fuchs, was especially impressed by the voice leading of the divided strings and the resulting rich sound. 'Sound' was also the compositional maxim with which Schreker engaged particularly intensively in later works. The program of this lunch concert is rounded off with Zoltán Kodály's "Dances from Galánta", in which the timbres of wind instruments join those of the strings. The alternating slow and fast dance melodies trace the build-up of this lunch concert and culminate in a spectacular, lively finale.
