Description
Every country has its own special way of celebrating Christmas. Ireland is no exception. The Danceperados of Ireland bring us closer to the Christmas traditions of the Emerald Isle with their 'Irish Christmas Show.' They take us into this special time, which has some very unique customs, such as the 'Wren Boys.' Young boys blacken their faces, wear wild straw hats, and dress in rag costumes. They go from house to house in disguise, singing special songs and receiving gifts. In ancient times, a captured wren was also carried along. The wren was considered to be in league with the devil. It becomes clear: Irish customs date back to pre-Christian rituals. The Danceperados take us back to a time before the commercialization of Christmas and the Santa Claus that is present everywhere in the Anglo-Saxon and our world. The English colonial rulers once banned the Catholic service, especially the one in Gaelic, accompanied by Irish folk melodies. There are ancient hymns in the Gaelic language that were sung at Christmas, and they will also be heard at the 'Irish Christmas Show.' Additionally, some of the Christmas songs in English, referred to as 'Carols,' will be performed. The 'Wexford Carol' is, for example, world-famous. Since many Irish people had to earn their living abroad then and now, Christmas is always the time of year when all the Irish living abroad strive to come home. They haven't seen their friends and families all year, and they are overjoyed to celebrate together. The pubs are packed, and whiskey and beer flow freely. Jigs & Reels are played, which also have Christmas names, such as 'Christmas Eve.' Where Jigs & Reels are played, wild dancing also takes place... It becomes clear: An Irish step dance show with the theme 'Irish Christmas' fits wonderfully together! Copyright: Gregor Eisenhuth
