Description
From the cultural effervescence of the 1960s emerges a new form of dance, close to performance, embodied by American choreographer Lucinda Childs. A manifesto work of American minimalism, her ballet Dance (1979) is exceptional and radical in many ways. This triple choreographic, musical, and visual partition is the result of her collaboration with two other great artists of the 20th century. After Einstein on the Beach, Lucinda Childs reunites with composer Philip Glass, who imagines a fluid score based on a simple rhythmic loop, upon which the dancers lay a gliding geometry. Their purified gestures unfold in a line that transforms imperceptibly, while the music continues its hypnotic flow. As for painter and sculptor Sol LeWitt, he creates the only film of his career. On an invisible canvas stretched in front of the stage, he projects a video of the dancers filmed during a rehearsal. The audience sees double: floating under the rigging or enlarged disproportionately next to their flesh-and-blood alter egos, the filmed shadows form dizzying variations and ghostly additions. Performed by seventeen dancers from the Lyon Opera Ballet, the entire show is constructed in a stunning and shimmering black-and-white echo between space, music, movement, and time. Our gaze is invited to circulate actively within the work, caught in an enchanting meditation that evokes a universal emotion that has not aged.
