Anton comes from an academic family, Alma was raised by her single mother. Anton is Jewish. Alma is not. They fall in love, move in together, argue and reconcile until Anton goes to New York. Only the events of October 7, 2023, the Gaza War, and the polarized atmosphere cause Anton to return to Alma, find comfort and refuge with her. But then a deep abyss opens up, and the hope for happiness seems further away than ever. In her second novel »Anton and Alma« (Suhrkamp), nominated for the German Book Prize 2026, Dana Vowinckel tells the story of a great love in our increasingly divided world in compellingly clear language. She creates a heart-wrenching, brave novel about what it means to be human: »She used to cling. Now he holds her hand like a shy child standing before the world.« Dana Vowinckel studied linguistics and literary studies in Berlin, Toulouse, and Cambridge. Her debut »Gewässer im Ziplock« was honored with the Mara-Cassens Prize, nominated for the Leipzig Book Fair Prize, translated multiple times, and adapted for the stage. Moderation: Daniel Schreiber From October 6 to November 9, the education and action days against antisemitism organized by the Amadeu Antonio Foundation will take place. Before the reading, Dana Vowinckel will conduct a workshop for students.
