Leoš Janáček, a generation younger Béla Bartók, and Igor Stravinsky form a significant trio of 20th-century composers who significantly responded to folk music. Each in their own way, all three were influenced by folk music in their musical thinking. Janáček and Bartók engaged with folk songs both theoretically and practically, conducting field research; for the former, folk music was a 'life truth' influencing his melodies, while for the latter, it became the foundation for working with modality and rhythm. Stravinsky was enchanted by folk rituals, but he only took from folk music what he needed at certain stages of his creative journey, primarily texts and melodies. In any case, all three composers worked with this source in a very personal and inventive manner.
