Description

Driven by a bet, two young men devise a plan to test the fidelity of their girlfriends. What follows is a sophisticated game of seduction and power: the four lovers are caught in a whirl of changing roles and uncertain truths, where reality and deception blur increasingly. Even more than 200 years after its premiere, Così fan tutte has not lost its sharpness; in 1790, the opera caused a small scandal. In her debut on the Main Stage, Netia Jones, Associate Director of The Royal Opera, offers a modern perspective on Mozart's social comedy: 18th-century love intrigues meet contemporary deception games. The young lovers are played by a strong ensemble around Louise Alder, Simone McIntosh, Mingjie Lei, and Huw Montague Rendall. Gerald Finley appears as the puppet-master Don Alfonso, along with Emily Pogorelc as Despina. Thomas Hengelbrock conducts, bringing Mozart's delicate, elegant music to shine and vividly emphasizing the surprisingly modern and provocative themes of the opera.
