Description
This year, Moira Morinini Pè, head of the Archaeology Service of the Office of Cultural Heritage, will present the results of the Castel Grande project 1984-1985, an international teamwork effort that once again demonstrates how rich, varied, and worthy of enhancement the archaeological heritage of the Canton of Ticino is. The hill of San Michele, where the medieval fortress of Castel Grande in Bellinzona stands, was the subject of two preventive excavation campaigns carried out in 1984 and 1985 in relation to the renovation works of the Arsenal built in 1820. Under the direction of the then Cantonal Office of Historical Monuments, these investigations highlighted the existence of a large depression that trapped and protected the remains of prehistoric and protohistoric occupations. Forty years after the excavations, the study of archival materials, the numerous finds discovered – over 3000 objects, mostly ceramic and lithic – and the structures attributable to the periods ranging from the Early Neolithic to the Final Bronze Age/Early Iron Age has resulted in a publication. Coordinated by the Cantonal Archaeological Service, the research was conducted by Samuel van Willigen (formerly Swiss National Museum), Domenico Lo Vetro (Florentine Museum and Institute of Prehistory / University of Florence), Cristian Scapozza (SUPSI), and Maruska Federici-Schenardi (Briva sagl / Moesano Museum), who will detail the finds and structures (particularly a kiln for firing ceramics) attributable to the Bronze Age during the evening. Registration and cost: No registration is required, and entry is free. A refreshment will be offered.
