Description
In short: Between work songs, folk, and electronic dystopia, Cleo Reed develops a radical sound language about work, origin, and resistance. Cleo Reed moves between music, performance, installation, and craft, exploring the connections between sound, body, work, and memory. Raised in New York and Washington, D.C., Reed combines classical training with a deep interest in Black underground sound and experimental practice. The centerpiece is the double album "CUNTRY" released in 2025: a multifaceted blend of folk, soul, blues, country, rap, and electronic music. The two sides of the album intentionally engage in a dialogue — between the traditions of American work songs and a dystopian-electronic present. Reed addresses the anger and exhaustion associated with work, the body, and the conditions of American working life, as well as her own origins between urban New York and her family's roots in the American South. With her distinctive fusion of tradition and contemporary, Cleo Reed develops a radical, layered sound language that preserves history not by keeping it static but by setting it in motion. Cleo Reed (voc, g), Matthew Jamal (b, elec)
