In 1949, after the end of World War II, Thomas Mann (Hanns Zischler), Nobel Prize-winning author, and his daughter Erika (Sandra Hüller), actress, author, and cabaret artist, embark on a journey through a devastated Germany – from Frankfurt in the American occupation zone to Weimar under Soviet control. On the occasion of Goethe's centenary, both sides of the inter-German border expect words of comfort, approval, and forgiveness from the greatest of all storytellers. Amidst jubilant heirs of Wagner and literature-savvy generals, Germany's most important writer is courted and sometimes even insulted, while the drama of his own family intensifies in silence. It is the first time since the war that Thomas Mann returns to his homeland, which he once fled into exile. A journey to the heart of the wounded German soul, destined to heal – for Erika and the 'Magician,' as his children often called Thomas Mann, it will be a journey deep within themselves.
