Federico Fellini Directed, written, produced, and scored by Charlie Chaplin, The Circus is one of the most accomplished films by the master of silent cinema. Released in 1928, it tells the story of Charlot, a clumsy and endearing vagabond, who accidentally gets hired at a traveling circus where he becomes, despite himself, the main comic attraction. In love with the beautiful equestrienne, he tries to impress — with the slapstick disasters one can imagine. Chaplin unleashes all his genius: the sequence of gags is clockwork precise, visually inventive, and deeply human. The famous lion cage scene or the tightrope walker scene are among the peaks of comedy cinema of all time. Beneath the laughter, as always with Chaplin, lies a bittersweet melancholy: Charlot, once again, does not get what he desires but departs with dignity, his cane under his arm. Awarded a special Oscar in 1929 for "his versatility and genius," The Circus remains a shining testament to what silent cinema had achieved as a peak of artistic expression, just before the advent of sound.
