The use of text excerpts from "In the Realm of Shadows" by Andrej Bely, translated from Russian by Birgit Veit, was made with the kind permission of Insel Verlag Duration: 1h 45 min. (including a break after about 45 min.) PREMIERE / World premiere: 08.06.2023 Almost exactly 100 years ago, hundreds of thousands of Russians emigrated to Berlin. The October Revolution of 1917 and the subsequent civil war forced many nobles, businessmen, and intellectuals to leave their homeland. While the political leaders among the Russian emigrants gathered in Paris, Prague became the Russian scientific center beyond the borders. And the writers? They came to Berlin! Almost all significant Russian authors of the 20th century lived here temporarily or visited the city, which in the early 1920s became a real experimental laboratory of literary exile. Thus, Vladimir Nabokov, Wladislaw Chodassewitsch, Andrej Bely, Boris Pasternak, Viktor Shklovsky, Marina Tsvetaeva, Nina Berberova, Alexei Remizov, Mark Aldanov, Alexei Tolstoy, Ilya Ehrenburg, Maxim Gorky, and many more lived and wrote in Berlin. At that time, Charlottenburg received the nickname "Charlottengrad"; Berlin itself was called "Moscow on the Spree" and "Third Capital of Russia." But how did the emigrants live in Berlin back then, and how did they perceive the city? Did life in exile mean the drying up of their creativity or rather a new artistic opportunity? The production illuminates a piece of Berlin history closely intertwined with the themes of flight, exile, and ultimately home. Alina Gause (actress, singer): Since the 2022/23 season, Alina Gause has been the artistic director of THEATER IM PALAIS and appears on stage in DIVA BERLIN, DIE DIETRICH – A Creation Story, EIN STÜCK ILLUSION – Stolpersteine, and CHARLOTTENGRAD – A Piece of Russia in the Middle of Berlin.
The Berliner is a graduate psychologist, author, actress, and singer. She completed her training in acting, singing, and dance in her hometown. Engagements followed, among others, at the Maxim Gorki Theater, Theater im Palais, Theater des Westens, in Stuttgart and Freiburg, as well as in film and television – including five solo evenings for which she wrote text and music. In addition to her artistic work, she specialized in advising creative personalities and institutions. In 2009, she founded a.way, a counseling center for creatives of all genres in Berlin. In 2014, she received a teaching assignment at the Berlin University of the Arts. Three non-fiction books about creatives have been published by Alina Gause (BoD, Springer Verlag), the most recent appeared in January 2022 in English (Springer Verlag). In 2023, her album "Winter in May" was released in German and English versions. Carl Martin Spengler (actor):
As co-founder and permanent ensemble member, Carl Martin Spengler has shaped the artistic profile of the house from day one.
Born in Leipzig, he studied at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts and shortly thereafter received an engagement at the Theater im Palast in Berlin. In 1987, he played the title role in Wengler & Sons, a German family saga by DEFA director Rainer Simon.
For 33 years, Carl Martin Spengler has captivated the audience of THEATER IM PALAIS with his versatility at over 130 evenings per year. Currently, he appears on stage in the following productions, among others: HILDEGARD KNEF – I believe I'll never be a lady, EIN STÜCK ILLUSION – Stolpersteine, GEORG KREISLER: Incurably Healthy, CHARLOTTENGRAD – A Piece of Russia in the Middle of Berlin, and many more.
