The operas Cavalleria rusticana by Pietro Mascagni and Pagliacci by Ruggero Leoncavallo are two works that are now almost inseparably linked; created in 1890 and 1892 respectively, both evoke the sound, scent, and atmosphere of Southern Italy, but also reflect the brutal and harsh naturalistic approach of Verismo at the end of the 19th century. In Cavalleria rusticana, Santuzza loves Turiddu, but he mourns his former lover Lola. This awakens Lola's husband Alfio's jealousy, who ultimately kills Turiddu. In Pagliacci, stage and reality blur: a harlequin in a comedy troupe, Canio, cannot distinguish between play and seriousness, loses his composure on stage, and kills his wife Nedda and her lover Silvio in a fit of jealousy. Opera chief conductor Alevtina Ioffe, director Anna Bergmann, and set designer Nadja Eller continue their collaboration this season and, together with the young Italian painter and rising star Leonardo Devito, whose style oscillates between Renaissance and New Objectivity, create a unique opera painting on the stage of the Stadttheater.
