There are few voices more deeply embedded in the iconography and mythology of American indie rock than that of Chan Marshall. Under the musical name Cat Power, Marshall has been releasing music for nearly 25 years.
With her distinctive voice – sometimes gentle and fragile, sometimes powerful and passionate – Cat Power has gained a loyal following and great respect in the music scene over the years. Her songs tell of loneliness, longing, healing, and the relentless search for authenticity.
Born in Atlanta, Georgia, she began her career in the New York underground scene and released her debut album Dear Sir in 1995. Her breakthrough came a few years later with Moon Pix (1998), a critically acclaimed work recorded in Australia with members of Dirty Three.
Cat Power's seventh studio album, The Greatest, immediately marked a milestone in her already celebrated career upon its release in January 2006. Recorded at the famous Ardent Studios in Memphis, Tennessee, with the support of some of the city's most renowned studio musicians, it was the first album by Cat Power to contain only songs written by Marshall, interpreted with unobtrusive Southern soul and impressive creative sovereignty. The Greatest was celebrated worldwide by critics and entered at number 34 on the Billboard 200 – Cat Power's greatest commercial success to date. Selected by Rolling Stone as number 6 in the “Top 50 Albums of 2006” and number 26 in the “100 Best Albums of the 2000s,” the album was awarded the prestigious Shortlist Music Prize in 2006 and made history as the first album by an artist to receive this honor. The album was also nominated for a Brit Award in the category “Best International Female Solo Artist.” The following year, Cat Power will present The Greatest in full as part of a special series of concerts celebrating its 20th anniversary. The tour kicks off on February 12, 2026, at the White Oak Music Hall in Houston, Texas. Afterwards, she will tour North America, Europe, and the UK until early November. We are very excited to welcome Cat Power in Hamburg next fall, specifically on October 12 at Docks.
