Description
Singer Rosemary Standley tells, sings, and interprets the opera Carmen by Georges Bizet after the libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy. She takes on the entire production alone this evening, playing and singing various roles. The exceptional artist is accompanied by a quintet of excellent musicians consisting of accordion, flute, violin, harp, and saxophone. This evening is an event like no other. It is the first time we can showcase a work by the Western Swiss theater maker François Gremaud. It is the third part of a trilogy dedicated to great tragic female figures of classical performing arts: Phèdre (theater), Giselle (ballet), and Carmen (opera). In Bizet's opera Carmen, the free-spirited Carmen seduces the soldier Don José. When Carmen turns to the bullfighter Escamillo, Don José falls deeper into jealousy and despair. What begins as a passionate encounter ends in a dramatic catastrophe: Don José kills Carmen. World-famous from Carmen is the melody of the aria Habanera "L'amour est un oiseau rebelle". With the support of Pro Helvetia, Swiss Culture Foundation. With Rosemary Standley (vocals/instrument)
