What does art mean in the age of artificial intelligence? And what constitutes an artistic practice when images, texts, and audiovisual worlds can increasingly be created with generative AI systems? The renowned artist Esther Hunziker has been working with digital technologies and algorithms for over three decades. In her artistic practice, she explores the interstices where identities, images, and narratives are destabilized by digital systems. Manuel Flurin Hendry, filmmaker, ZHdK lecturer, and senior researcher at ETH Zurich, fundamentally questions what we actually mean when we talk about 'AI' in his presentation. He critically reflects on the notions of intelligence, creativity, and authorship associated with it. In the subsequent moderated discussion with curator Pascale Speck, the question arises of what constitutes a well-founded fine arts practice in dealing with AI. What distinguishes artistic engagement from mere technical play? And how does AI change our understanding of art, authorship, and the value of creative work? The Zurich AI Festival is a flagship initiative presented by ETH AI Center, Greater Zurich Area, City of Zurich, Canton of Zurich, and Zurich Tourism, supported by leading partners from science, industry, and administration.
