Meeting with Céline du Chéné, author of the book Cabarets in conversation with Magali Le Mens (art historian, researcher, and co-author of Allures dissidentes) and Gaëlle Nydegger (doctoral student, author of a thesis on queer places in French-speaking Switzerland in the early 20th century) cabaret! The cabaret occupies a prominent place each year within the festival. An art with multiple dimensions and virtues, it is now an intrinsic part of queer cultures, intertwined with Everybody’s Perfect. But as queer artistic cabaret meets popular success, what remains of its subversive essence, its political charge, and its transgression of normative sexual codes, its core? In an exciting three-way dialogue, in conversation with Céline du Chéné, the meeting explores the history of cabaret, its emergence as a porous space connected to current political issues, nourished by repression, its actors seeking refuge and places of total freedom, their clothing expressions, sources of audacity, irreverence, and creation. And for which audiences? Here and elsewhere. Céline du Chéné French columnist, producer, and author, she collaborates on the program Mauvais genres on France Culture. Specialist in shady worlds, she explores cabarets, nightlife arts, and subversive performances, and regularly appears on the stage of the cabaret La Barbichette. Her works question the strange, eroticism, and marginalized female figures. The meeting is followed by a book signing of Cabarets by Céline du Chéné at 5:30 PM at La Paillette.
