Moritz Tramer (1882–1963) is considered a pioneer of child psychiatry. While he received international recognition during his lifetime, he has largely been forgotten today. The «Journal of Child Psychiatry» he published from 1934 to 1963 can be regarded as an important platform for exchange for an international and increasingly dispersed professional community during the war years. Children also had a voice through numerous illustrations of drawings. This volume highlights selected aspects of early child psychiatry from a historical and cultural-historical perspective. At the center of two chapters is the journal: on the one hand as a fragile network, on the other as a publication site for children's drawings. Another chapter situates Tramer's innovative approach to the child in the tension field of psychiatry and eugenics in Switzerland for his time. One contribution traces the beginnings of the children's observation station Gotthelfhaus founded by him, and one chapter is dedicated to the scientific and journalistic work of the psychotechnician Franziska Baumgarten-Tramer (1883–1970), in which professional work, social responsibility, and public engagement were closely linked.
