Richard was once someone. A respected architect who built dams and aqueducts – structures that channel water, connect valleys, overcome distances. In his own life, he has never succeeded. Since the death of his wife, he has retreated into a luxurious residential complex, isolated from the world, estranged from his only daughter Helen. Now, almost completely blind, he has nothing left but to ask her for help. Helen comes. And brings everything Richard has not wanted to see for years: her black husband, a writer; her political beliefs; the wounds she has suffered as a daughter. Both characters are blind in their own way. And both begin to recognize each other finally, feeling their way.
The question that this play poses remains unanswered: Can you love someone whose beliefs you completely reject? Big themes in a small space
Lot Vekemans, the most performed Dutch playwright, writes "small chamber plays about big themes" (Nachtkritik). Blind was created with a view to South Africa – and resonates everywhere where generations and ideological bubbles no longer have anything to say to each other. Translated into 22 languages, performed in 35 countries.
Why this evening
Vekemans addresses in ninety minutes what others need a novel for: racism in the family, the silence between generations, the question of what love can endure. Blind does not aim to convert anyone – the play opens the eyes and leaves the rest to the audience.
The cast
Peter Kremer as Richard – a man who has created structures for eternity and must witness his own walls crumble. Known from Tatort, Die Toten vom Bodensee, and especially six seasons as the title character of the ZDF series Siska.
Lisa Wildmann as Helen – lawyer, daughter, wife; a woman who has learned to stand up for herself, forgetting what she once owed her father. Regularly seen in film and television, teaches at the University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart.
