What does homeland mean? Is it a place, a feeling, or a longing? With their program Narrow Sea, the Black Forest Percussion Group addresses this universal question. Curated by Lee Ferguson, the program combines works by Caroline Shaw, Matt Ulery, Hector Rufaro Mugani, and Erik Griswold, which tell of hope and departure, fear, loss, and the desire for belonging. The centerpiece is Caroline Shaw's Narrow Sea for percussion quartet, piano, and soprano. Together with pianist Elmar Schrammel and soprano Leonor Pereira Pinto, the piece unfolds an intense sound world where the longing of the Sacred-Harp texts becomes immediately tangible. Griswold's Fear, Ulery's Emigre and Exile, and Mugani's Hurukuru NaNyamasase also approach the question of homeland in different ways.
