Bienne and Water

Description

Today, if we are thirsty or want to wash ourselves, all we need to do is turn on a tap. Feet and cellars generally stay dry thanks to effective flood protection. In summer, the shores of Lake Bienne resemble seaside resorts, and Île-de-la-Suze invites the soul to wander. How has water influenced the lives of the residents of Bienne and its region? For centuries, it was the Roman spring that supplied the city with water, before larger networks were created. The Suze was tamed, and its hydraulic energy exploited to enable the growth of Bienne, an industrial city. The correction of the Jura waters protected Bienne from floods and gave rise to new cultural landscapes. Draining wasteland areas towards the end of the 19th century allowed development outside the city walls. Since then, each generation has imagined new ways to make the most of the land between the old town and the lake, whether for industry, leisure, housing, or transportation. "Bienne and Water" is the first of the new thematic islands developed by the NMB from its collections of history, art, and archaeology.
