Biedermann and the Arsonists

Do you remember? The titular arsonists in Max Frisch's "Lehrstück ohne Lehre" are not decorative placeholders. They are there to do exactly what their name suggests: set fires. And so it is no surprise that the city ends up in flames. Even Biedermann cannot be surprised, as he has taken in the arsonists, even carrying barrels full of gasoline to the attic at the end. He should have seen it coming! And yet he ignored all signals, invented excuses, and upheld the presumption of innocence. Doesn't that sound familiar? Running headlong into disaster? And so, more and more free radicals, or in other words: arsonists, are gathering on the political world stage. And we, the honest Biedermänner and Biederfrauen, are getting agitated in talk shows and at Stammtisch discussions, understanding all the pros and cons, always knowing at least two perspectives on a problem, and yet the potential danger outside our individualized worlds is growing beyond measure. But where to put a stop, when every Biedermann and Biederfrau has their own ideas about the arsonists? And while we are still fighting over the right to define, they do what they always do: set fires.
