Description
In a very short time, the Bern Carnival has become the third largest carnival event in Switzerland. It always starts on Thursday, when the bear trapped in the cage tower is awakened from hibernation and freed with the "Bärebefreiig" (Bear Liberation).
In the wintry temperatures, masked Fasnächtler swarm through the alleys and restaurants of the old town. Guggen, Schnitzelbänkler as well as theater and costume groups, make the 6 km long Bernese arcades vibrate with foolish rhythms and their cacophony.
