Description

The exhibition shows the history of Italian migration in Basel – and the stories of the people who built a new life in the region since the early 20th century. Pictures and exhibits tell of prejudices, rejection, and exclusion, as well as opportunities and successes. They depict the transformation from open borders before World War I, through fascism and the 'foreigner discourse' of the 1960s, to the triumph of 'Italianità' – understood as an Italian way of life – at the end of the 20th century. At the same time, the exhibition makes visible how strongly Italians have shaped and enriched the region – in culture and politics, economy and sports, gastronomy, and everyday life. The exhibition is written in German and Italian.
