And once again, a soloist from our own ranks is to be experienced on stage! This time it is Francesco Sica, since 2023 the principal of the second violins. In the two romances by Ludwig van Beethoven, he will be able to present his elegant playing and warm tone in an ideal way. The solo works are framed by two opening pieces for stage works. The imperious, stormy opening motif of the "Coriolan" overture is contrasted by a restless string theme, symbolizing the emotional turmoil of the Roman title hero. Salvatore Viganò's libretto and choreography for the Prometheus story were lost, but Beethoven's musical numbers have been preserved; in particular, the overture has already given many concert evenings a festive opening. After drama and ballet music, film must not be missing either: with Per Nørgård's "Pastoral" from the highly successful film "Babette’s Feast" from 1988, the "fifth art" also comes into its own in this program... Joseph Haydn composed his Symphony No. 100 during his second trip to London, where it premiered in 1794 and was immediately enthusiastically received. The nickname "Military" does not come from Haydn and probably refers to the percussion instruments used in the second and fourth movements, which recall so-called "Janissary music" (Turkish military bands). However, the audience at the premiere probably heard more the then ongoing military conflicts of France and were stirred accordingly. Troubled times – then as now.
