Description
A silent film with live music by Steinway Artist Moritz Ernst (piano) and music by Malte Giesen (re-recording 2020) and Ludwig van Beethoven, whose death will be commemorated for the 200th time in 2027. The Austrian silent film "Beethoven" by Hans-Otto Löwenstein celebrated the 100th anniversary of the composer's death. Featuring the great character actor Fritz Kortner in the title role, the film depicts the major milestones in Ludwig van Beethoven's life and links his biography with his major works such as the 2nd Symphony, Eroica, 5th and 9th Symphonies, Fidelio, and Missa Solemnis. Filmed at original locations, the film premiered in cinemas on February 18, 1927. The new musical arrangement by the acclaimed composer Malte Giesen (*1988) incorporates all Beethoven works mentioned in the film into an original adaptation that oscillates between cinema and art music for piano, preparations, and sound playback. Giesen employs techniques that reflect the contemporary aesthetics of his generation: remix, sampling, or shuffling. The film is accompanied at the piano by Moritz Ernst (*1986), an East Westphalian pianist and harpsichordist. Ernst is among those rare artists who think and sound history and present in one breath.
