Description
The exhibited colored sandstone sculptures of Basel Minster in the Museum Kleines Klingental offer a rich depiction of their respective periods from 1200 to the 16th century. Starting with the wheel of fortune, through angels and monkeys to the grotesques of the waterspouts, it is discussed which ideas and perspectives of medieval society were carved in stone in the Romanesque and later Gothic styles. Here, opposites also meet, for example, the deep piety that certain saint sculptures radiate, contrasted with playful and humorous elements.
