Description
Arthur Schnitzler's novella "Fräulein Else" from 1924 is a piece of world literature. The text is characterized by the consistency of a continuous inner monologue. One immediately participates in Else's thoughts. Else reveals her inner life to the audience.
Else is 19 years old and alone for the first time on vacation in a hotel, she casts glances at young men and at the behavior of other women. The wealthy society strolls, plays tennis, listens to the pianist in the hotel lobby. Else receives a letter from her mother. The father is close to bankruptcy and needs money from a Mr. von Dorsday, who is currently staying in the same hotel as Else. Else is supposed to ask him for it. It is about the abuse of power by the parents, the misogyny of society, and the response of Mr. von Dorsday, who wants to give the money but demands to see Else naked. Else gets caught in an irresolvable conflict between parental pressure and abuse. Else is treated as a commodity or object.
The exploitation of the young woman is an oppressive web. Her own freedom stands against societal pressure. Her inner turmoil is made palpable through the inner monologue. The young actress Sophie Eglin from Basel is accompanied by the rising concert pianist Alma Ambrosi-Santamaria. She plays Chopin and Schumann.
