Description

Barbara Hannigan already attracted attention as a young singer with her virtuosic and sensitive interpretations of modern music: No role was too demanding for her, neither Bernd Alois Zimmermann nor György Ligeti pushed her to her limits. And as a conductor? Here too, she convinces with cleverly designed programs and sometimes accompanies herself. This is also the case with Benjamin Britten's colorfully transfigured song cycle «Les Illuminations», with which he, newly arrived in America, marked the beginning of a new life away from the war turmoil in Europe. Only a few years earlier, Igor Stravinsky was also in America and received the commission for the baroque-inspired chamber concerto «Dumbarton Oaks». It is his last work as a guest in America. After completion, he also settled there permanently. Beethoven's reorientations, on the other hand, came without geographical relocation. After two professionally less productive years – apart from the large number of love letters – he suddenly burst with creativity in 1806 and created several masterpieces. Among them is the groundbreaking Fourth Symphony for him. Barbara Hannigan presents three well-known names with three of their (comparatively) less frequently performed works.

Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No. 4 in B-flat major, op. 60

Benjamin Britten: «Les Illuminations» op. 18 for high voice and string orchestra, text by Arthur Rimbaud

Igor Stravinsky: Concerto for Chamber Orchestra in E-flat major «Dumbarton Oaks»

Orchestra: Musikkollegium Winterthur
Conductor and soprano: Barbara Hannigan
