TOGETHER, the new project by Bänz Oester, continues a tradition that only a few formations can still claim today. It immediately recalls the so-called Spiritual Jazz, whose heyday extended from the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s. They convey to us this 'old religion', not as blind superstition, but as a unifying force that fosters a fundamental feeling of human belonging, brotherhood, and sisterhood. In the new band, he is supported by his longtime companion Malcolm Braff on piano, as well as two outstanding young musicians from the Jazzcampus Basel environment: Swedish guitarist Albin Ormegard and American drummer Genius Wesley. These musicians do not just play their instruments; they are the instruments. They become sound themselves, present in the moment, creating pure joy; and together they create a sound world that seems to resonate with the fabric of the universe. TOGETHER allows everything to flourish. The music unfolds in generous, freely improvised tension arcs, grooving, singing, and luxuriating, yet this music also tells of longing for freedom, rebellion against systems of control and oppression, and a deep need for transcendence and humanity. Through their interplay, the musicians tirelessly reaffirm their spiritual claim and their desire to free themselves from all forms of coercion. In doing so, they continue a tradition that only a few formations maintain today. One inevitably thinks of John Coltrane's quartet and other pioneers of Spiritual Jazz, whose peak period ranged from the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s. This music still feels surprisingly current today. In a time when control algorithms become more efficient and machines reach or even surpass human physical and mental capabilities, what Bänz Oester, Albin Ormegard, Malcolm Braff, and Genius Wesley offer is exactly what we need most urgently. With "UNIT live!" Moods and the renowned Swiss jazz label UNIT Records pool their strengths and create a joint format. Regularly, we bring current productions from the UNIT cosmos to the Moods stage and showcase the diversity of Unit Jazz.
