BaBa ZuLa

Description

With a blend of traditional instruments, electronics, and Anatolian retro sounds, BaBa ZuLa creates their unmistakable "İstanbul Psychedelia." Deeply rooted in traditions yet firmly anchored in the here and now, their music is a vibrant bridge between the past and present; between the cultures of Istanbul. Since their formation in 1996, BaBa ZuLa combines their own compositions with free improvisation – each concert becomes a unique experience. The band, consisting of Murat Ertel (electric saz, vocals, theremin) and Levent Akman (percussion, machines, objects), complemented by Ümit Adakale (darbuka), Esma Ertel (vocals, dance), and rotating bass and oud players, creates ritualistic performances that are between concert and Gesamtkunstwerk. BaBa ZuLa represent a psychedelic form of Istanbul Rock’n’Roll – energetic, unpredictable, and shaped by the cultural diversity of a city between Asia and Europe.
