Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Dissonance Quartet owes its nickname to the bold, chromatically sharpened introduction, which still feels modern today. Here, Mozart demonstrates his mastery by finding a radiant C Major from the harmonic fog of the first measures – a tribute to Haydn and a milestone of the genre. With Mieczysław Weinberg, a composer whose significance has been rediscovered worldwide in recent years, we focus on his 3rd String Quartet, op.14 (1944), a work of high emotional density. Standing in the tradition of Shostakovich, Weinberg combines lyrical melancholy with rhythmic sharpness. It is music that reflects the impact of exile and war, yet retains a profoundly human voice. With Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's String Quartet in A Minor, op.13, we return to Romanticism. The 18-year-old Mendelssohn wrote this work shortly after Beethoven's death. It is a passionate engagement with his late works, interwoven with the question of one's own song: Is it true?. Mendelssohn weaves formal rigor with almost operatic drama. To conclude, the ensemble takes us to the village squares of Transylvania. Béla Bartók's Romanian Folk Dances are jewels of characterization. In the arrangement for strings, they unfold their full splendor – from the melancholic melody to the rapid, virtuosic finale. The Arcadia Quartet has established itself as one of Romania's leading ensembles since its founding in 2006 at the Music Academy in Cluj-Napoca. After further studies in Vienna, the four musicians conquered the most significant stages in the world – from the Amsterdam Concertgebouw and London's Wigmore Hall to Suntory Hall in Tokyo and the Vienna Musikverein. The quartet is celebrated by the international press for its 'extraordinary richness of sound and expressiveness' (Ensemble Magazine) and a 'beauty that strikes right to the heart' (The Sunday Times). Their complete recordings set standards: Their Bartók recordings for the Chandos label have received top ratings worldwide (including Diapason d’Or). A mammoth project was the recording of all 17 string quartets by Mieczysław Weinberg, whose individual volumes received the highest ratings from critics and won international awards.
