Sometimes a story begins in a place where no one would expect its end. The story of Anaïs Reno begins in Geneva. Born in Switzerland as the daughter of a Franco-Canadian opera singer and an American violinist, she moved to Manhattan with her parents as a toddler. There she grew up in the cultural heart of New York – surrounded by opera, classical music, and the jazz scene that still attracts musicians from all over the world. Perhaps this unusual background explains why her music so naturally builds bridges. Between Europe and America. Between tradition and the present. Between youthful lightness and astonishing musical maturity. When you hear Anaïs Reno for the first time, you forget her age (born 2003) after a few bars. Her voice possesses the warmth, elegance, and naturalness more often associated with the great singers of the past century. At the same time, she never sounds nostalgic. She does not copy role models – she tells her own stories. That is why she is considered one of the most extraordinary talents of the young American jazz scene today. Already at the age of ten, she performed on stages such as Birdland, Carnegie Hall, Dizzy’s Club, Rose Hall, Madison Square Garden, the Edinburgh Jazz Festival, and the legendary PizzaExpress Jazz Club in London. She has worked with musical personalities like Emmet Cohen, Peter Bernstein, Gary Smulyan, and many other greats of modern jazz. Awards soon followed. Anaïs Reno won, among others, the American Traditions Vocal Competition, the Mabel Mercer Competition, and the Julie Wilson Award. As an Ella Fitzgerald Scholar, she deepened her training at the renowned SUNY Purchase in New York and developed her distinctive style between the Great American Songbook and modern jazz. Her debut album Lovesome Thing – Anaïs Reno sings Ellington & Strayhorn reached the American jazz charts immediately after its release and was enthusiastically received by the international press. This was followed by the acclaimed live album At PizzaExpress – Live in London and in 2025 the second studio album Lady of the Lavender Mist, which firmly established her reputation as one of the great young voices of jazz. For her concert at Musig im Pflegidach, Anaïs Reno brings a top-class trio.
At the piano is British pianist Jamie Safir, one of the most exciting young musicians of his generation. His sensitive, elegant playing combines lyrical finesse with great harmonic openness, making him an ideal musical partner for singers. On double bass is New Yorker Sameer Shankar. With his warm tone, exceptional musicality, and fine sense of interaction, he is one of the rising bassists of the young New York scene. Together, Safir and Shankar form the ideal foundation for Anaïs Reno's musical storytelling. This concert is Anaïs Reno's first appearance in Switzerland – in the very country where her story began. Hardly any artist embodies the motto of our anniversary season “The Spirit of the Future” as aptly as Anaïs Reno. She does not look back to copy the past. She takes the spirit of great American jazz into the future – full of personality, depth, and astonishing naturalness.
