¡Adiós, Roberto!

Life requires decisions. Roberto González-Monjas has always had a lucky hand: when he came to Winterthur as concertmaster in 2013, when he began conducting, and also when he switched from concertmaster to conductor's podium at the Musikkollegium six years ago. Therefore, we are sure that his latest decision is the right one. Othmar Schoeck was somewhat less lucky with his decisions, privately, politically, perhaps even musically. In 1945, a heart attack threw him off course, and his music was sidelined in post-war modernism. But the muses are sometimes lenient with their favorites, and so Schoeck achieved his greatest success to date this very year with "Sommernacht" after a poem by Gottfried Keller. A shimmering string music that fits perfectly with the motto of Roberto González-Monjas' last Musikkollegium season: "Pastorale." Gustav Mahler was exceptionally lucky when he chose texts to set to music. From five already musical poems by Friedrich Rückert, Mahler created a highlight of the orchestral song. What luck to hear these songs sung by the dark, noble, flexible voice of the great Andrè Schuen! Whether Johannes Brahms decided against Clara Schumann or vice versa, the decision seemed fruitful for his music in any case. Had he stayed with Clara, he would not have had to greet her "many thousands of times" on postcards from Switzerland. And then there would have been no wonderful alphorn call in his first symphony (which he noted on the postcard). Anyway: In hopeful C major, the orchestra advances in the finale of the symphony towards the future. With these sounds, we accompany Roberto González-Monjas virtually to the city gate and call after him: ¡Hasta luego! ¡Ya nos veremos! General Information

The concert takes place at the Stadthaus Winterthur and marks the farewell of Roberto González-Monjas as conductor of the Musikkollegium. In addition to works by Schoeck, songs by Gustav Mahler and Johannes Brahms will also be performed.
