A child prodigy, born into a family of musicians in 2007, Alexandra Dovgan took up the piano at the age of four and a half and joined the Central Music School of the Moscow Conservatory under Mira Marchenko. A winner of five international competitions, hailed by Grigory Sokolov for her ‘exceptionally harmonious’ talent, she is one of the most renowned performers of her generation, having earned her place in the grand tradition of contemporary pianists. The remarkable focus of her play combines spontaneous depth, purity of expression and emotional intensity. For this recital, she is scaling the heights. The epic proportions of Beethoven’s monumental Sonata No. 29, the 'Hammerklavier’, are a challenge for the very instrument itself, the visionary 'keyboard of hammers’. With Chopin, the piano becomes an intimate confidant: the Nocturnes Op. 27, combining internal fever and the murmur of a barcarolle, followed by the greater peace and nostalgia of Scherzo No. 4, with its chromatic flourishes. Lastly, Rachmaninoff’s Sonata No. 2 promises fire, rich sound and radiant lyricism. An incandescent journey to the very heart of the piano.
